Finding Galway pretty good for the in-running trades with the huge fields and multiple little gambles going on per race. Upped the bank again yesterday quite easily, in fact and coupled with some decent returns from Goodwood, it was a hugely successfull day for me.
The two I had targeted at Goodwood drifted well out prior to the off which would normally be an opportune time to green up for me but I was on such a roll, I thought nothing of leaving everything to go in play. Rebel Soldier was easily available at 5's and 6's through the 2.45 at Goodwood before going on to lead and win by a head eventually. I traded out for a small profit having layed at 3.25 initially... lucky with that one!
Big Issue in the 5.05 maiden, I had layed at 3.00 early on and seeing the sheer size of the animal going to post, I traded out pre race at 5's. The horse lost but is one to note for the future as it came home like a train once it got the hang of this racing lark!
Haven't had a look at todays cards yet but it certainly looks a decent day for us... let's see how we go.
Good luck.

Glorious Galway!
After looking at the fields for yesterdays afternoon racing I decided to hit the sack early and get up in time for the Galway meeting. Traditionally, Galway is a real punters haven where it pays to follow the money and take serious note of any bit of a gamble going on so I was all eyes to how the markets were behaving. I wasn't particularly looking to become part of any gamble.. just looking to avoid anything that might have alot of money riding on it thus becoming a decent lay option. Surprisingly the whole card was relatively straightforward in Galway terms and outside of the obvious Weld factor, there weren't many movers at all. What about that man Weld.. He never fails to come up with something at Galway.
I did manage to trade in and out of quite a few of the market leaders with multiple lays per race to post a decent profit for the day and indeed I actually managed to pass my months target with a little bit to spare. Hopefully more of the same later today!
I've found a couple to oppose today at Goodwood in the shapes of Rebel Soldier in the 2.45 and Big Issue in the 5.05.
Rebel Soldier is well fancied but getting the distance is an issue in my mind and this is a big step up for the animal too. Worth taking on at 3/1.
Big Issue might just find a couple with experience too good here and being unraced and set to go off at about 2/1, its one I'll be taking on... I fancy Straight Line to win this one.
Good luck today!

Anyone want to swop houses??
This is getting seriously frustrating. I don't know how any of you work around problems like these but if a solution is out there.. I want to hear it.
Here's the problem... it's where we live... we keep on getting bloody visitors!
Of coure, because of the time difference, the socialising and beer drinking and bbq time are always in full swing just when I should be settling down for a few hours of racing. Come 11pm, I should have all the form done, all the races assessed and all my strategies worked out for the night but in the last few weeks, from friday to sunday, I just can't get the work done because of those bloody visitors... HELP!
I can only imagine this is going to get worse as the weather warms up and being on the doorstep of Australias equivalent to disneyland doesn't help matters... the stones throw from the beach adds to the confusion. So there it is.. if anyone has a house in the middle of a toxic waste dump that they want to swop... please let me know... maybe then I can get some serious work done!
As things stand, I've added to the months profit to the tune of $215 over a very few races through the past four or five days sort of sneaking on and off of Betfair when the opportunity presents itself. Figures updated accordingly.
Back later with a look at tonights races.
Good luck!

Couple of solid days
Had two good solid returns over the last two days. Reasonable sized fields combined with reasonable quality racing I suspect are two of the main reasons for my profits. I am seeing a trend here in that if there are mostly low class races on any given day, my returns suffer because of it.
I took the time earlier to sit down and go through my previous selections for July so far and one thing, apart from low grade racing being poor on the pocket, is that short sprint races are just too volatile, market wise, to be getting involved in, especially in running. Most of my 'mistakes' have come in 5 and 6 furlong races so I need to tread carefully with these from now on. This might seem obvious to those with in running nous and yes, its something that I have suspected for a while myself ... its when I see it in plain black and white that it becomes glaringly obvious that these types of races need to be avoided.
Im pretty happy overall with the months performance so far and apart from the above I cannot see any other obvious failings with my methods. I failed to get price matched on about ten percent of races which would have returned even more profit, had they been matched... I may look at tweaking my entry points to counteract this.. I think, just for now, I will leave well enough alone.
Ok... gotta go look at the cards for today.
Good luck all.

Miserable Monday
Don't know what it is with mondays but it seems to be an exceptionally difficult day to make decent money in this game. I think that the liquidity in the market has alot to do with it... the less money the harder it is to get your price matched, especially in running.
Monday might become my regular day off if there are no decent races about. OK... descision made. Mondays are a rest day for me from now on unless there are good quality races happening.
Made a very slight loss of $30 over eight races. Just could not get in front and bailed out in the end with plenty races left.. just did not seem to be 'with it' at all. Thankfully theres allways the next day!!!

Mondays edge........
A couple of edges to consider today for the meetings at Yarmouth and Ayr ... especially for us layers.
Favourites in Handicap races in July have shown a 24% strike rate at a return of 85.1% over the past six years... thats good laying territory and worth considering. Whittle it down to favourites in the 3.00 to 5.50 bfsp range and the strike rate reduces to 18.5% for a return of only 75%... thats great laying territory and one area I will target today. As allways, I recommend laying at a good deal less than sp in running and be prepared to dutch up with something else to cover your initial lay.
Have fun and good luck!

Spewin!.................
Sorry for being unable to post these last few days but it aint my fault!
I've been without the internet since Thursday last week only getting back on line about two hours ago. We have major road works happening nearby and apparently one of the machines cut into a host of cabling knocking out our phone and internet connections. Not only that, we lost our foxtel service too,.. thats the Aussie equivalent of Sky.
I can't for the life of me understand how it takes the best part of five days to fix a simple 'severed' line while in the meantime I'm still paying through the nose for a service that I don't have.
I'm really spewing cause I missed getting on AirChief at the Curragh... bloody 7.0 on Betfair!! Readers will know that this horse is of interest to me so I'm gutted I missed the boat with it at a price. Actually, there seemed to be some class racing from the Curragh... pity I missed it all.
Because of missing racing completely for four days, I've decided to revise my monthly target so as not to set myself too high a mountain to climb... I don't need the pressure of trying to over achieve.
Anyway... I'm not at all prepared for tonights racing so Im off to have a gander at the cards.... before the connection drops out again!!!

I Don't Believe It !
Victor Melldrum.... a classic line and from one of my favourite shows. Last night I failed to select ONE winning play and all that kept coming into my head was a vision of Victor saying that immortal line over and over again.
I was fortunate in a way, as I had made the descision to only play the first five races so ending up with a small loss after five was probably the lesser of all evils on what was probably a poor enough day for my style of play. If I don't get near the odds I like on the win lay market, I often play the place lay one, generally to pretty fair success.... not last night. Animals that normally wouldn't place in a one horse race were racing out of their skins once my lay money went on them... I often think that theres some guy at the end of a computer screen at Betfair HQ waiting for me to lay a selction and then, just for a laugh, he manipulates the in running market to show my selection racing towards 1.01, giving me heart failure.... of course as soon as I try to trade out on some other animal, he (having another laugh) changes the market to show my initial selection heading rapidly towards 1000!!
Ah well, such is the life of an inrunning player... never a dull moment with lots and lots of "I Don't Believe It".
I haven't had a chance to even look at tonights racing but am having the morning off tomorrow, so I will have a good shot at a few races later.
Be good!
By the way... loss of $152 last night... not too critical.. could be worse.

From little things big things grow...
Had an email from a mate in Ireland yesterday saying that he was loading up by as much as he could get his hands on with O'Briens Air Chief Marshall at Dundalk. Knowing that I like to play 'in-running', he suggested it may drift in running as Murtagh would more than likely leave it late to push the button on the jolly.
Now, being such short odds, I normally wouldn't go near it, but knowing my mate, this was as good as a certainty.
As forecast, the Air Chief sat just off the pace to the final furlong, drifting to just above evens, Murtagh duly pushed the button and the horse won by fifteen lengths.
I managed to get a decent amount matched at $1.90 - $1.95. Job done. Thanks mate!
I'm telling you this story just to point out that if an opportunity comes along, no matter how small it may seem, take it. You may even get lucky and double or triple your odds in running. Was it luck or was it a case of excellant race reading by my mate? Bit of both really but mainly it was about knowing how this particular jockey likes to ride in races like this and knowing that this horse was several classes above the opposition.
Actually it just occurred to me that on a visit to Ireland last year, this same mate and I were watching the Prix de l'Arc over a couple of 'quiet pints' (I've yet to come across a 'loud' pint!!).
Sea The Stars was waaaaaay back in the field getting passed by billy mcgintys donkey and all his cousins.. the horse was pulling fiercly this way and that, its tail flailing around all over the place and I honestly thought this thing was going to finish dead last... my mate had that smug look on his face of someone that knows something and he said "Kinane will romp this". Of course the rest is history... Sea The Stars won easing up in the end ... Kinane pushed the button and steered through the field...you just got to know how these jockeys operate.
I'm learning all the time and for in running plays it pays to get to know how a race is run. Be wary of laying against the top jocks especially in big prize races. They have an uncanny knack of getting a dead horse over the line... in front!
Oh yeah... last night... finished in front to the tune of $176.
Back later with a look at Tuesdays nags.
Good luck.

FFS!.... Its Mondays preview
Anytime I see Ffos Las in print I allways wonder wtf it stands for!
A couple of edges I've found for todays lay minded amongst us.. looking at both Ayr and Ffos as a unit, any beast priced in the 2/1 to 9/2 bracket in Handicaps will, over the long term, produce winning returns of just 70.8% at Betfair SP.
Thats a decent laying stat in anyones view.
Out of 152 selections in the past six years, only 24 have saluted the judge giving us layers an 84.2% strike rate. Laying in running gives us the opportunity to beat the BFSP even further as we are all well aware that the lower sp's generally tighten again once in play. My strategy for today will be to dutch lay some ,at these prices, in running with a view to greening up if the chance arises.
As I said earlier, I will only be playing the first five races today due to work committments... good luck if you're on!

The blind leading the blind....
You've all heard the expression....
Yesterday I made a foolish descision to take the easy option in running and use the timeform ratings to determine my selections for the days racing.
I had one huge mother of a night on the turps on Saturday night, attending a mates 40th birthday party and boy, was I suffering big time yesterday.
In hindsight, I should have stayed well clear of the pc as I was in no state to be setting my focus on anything at all, never mind race trading.
Anyway... I paid the price. I lost heavily on the first three or four races and was chasing my tail for the rest of the evening. I decided that if I got close to $200 down, I would leave it at that and take the loss. I managed to edge close to that figure by the twelvth race so, much to the annoyance of the gambler in me, I bailed out.. just shy of the $200 loss for the day.
Two things I learned from the day were;
1: Do not trade when you cannot completely focus on what you are doing, be it feeling ill, or feeling hungover, or both!
2: Do not be swayed by other peoples opinions.. your own instinct and judgement are whats important.. stick with them!
I've decided from tonight to set a target for the first 5 races. If I make the target earlier, I will bail out. Whatever happens I will finish on the day at 5 races. I've got a busy week this week at work, so I need to get to bed relatively early.. hence the 5 race limit. Most days the 5 races will be done and dusted by midnight Aussie time.. lets see how that pans out!
Good luck all!!

Good times all round!
Yesterday was unusual for me.
I normally have a dreadfull time of it on Fridays.. don't really know why. I do things no differently than the norm but consistantly struggle to stay in the game. This Friday, I just could not put a foot wrong. Out of two dozen plays, I had one losing one to end the day over $600 ahead.
The thing that beats me is how come on other days I can use exactly the same methods and come up well short, even or a just a little ahead?? I guess thats the gamble of it all even though I don't really feel that I am gambling as I know I won't lose my bank... well I could... but it would take a statistically impossible amalgamation of events to do so.
Nice to see the Aussie horses do well last night allthough the one I fancied, Nicconi, never got the run of the race. Ah well.... such is horseracing. Mr Murtagh rode a fantastic strong race on the favourite ... nice of the stewards to give him several days off to spend his winnings!!
Anyway.. on to today (tonight, Aussie time). A good friend of mine is turning forty today so we will be heading out on the beer later. No racing for me today!
Good luck!

Bloody work!!
Unfortunately, I am not yet in a position to 'retire' from actual work and the past couple of days I've had only minimal time to devote to racing due to early morning starts. The little time I've had though has produced a small profit mainly due to the dismal performances of fancied runners at Newmarket. Some of the Ascot form for runners at Newmarket is looking really dodgy and there were a few opportunities yesterday to take advantage of the fact as in Elzaam and Tazeez. It pays to scratch a little deeper in the form lines when assessing the chances of the odds on jollies!
Theres HUGE interest here in Australia in Nicconi at Newmarket later... I'll be having a little on the place market at decent odds.
Back later with tonights(Aussie time) preview.

A needle in a haystack.........
Newmarket.
I'll be avoiding playing much here today.
Too many good beasts, good prizemoney and large fields tend to suit the gamblers amongst us and not an ideal meeting for us conservative layers.
Looking at angles from a layers perspective.... if you take five and six year old favourites, historically their strike rate is poor enough compared to the average so I will possibly look at laying any favourite that meets the age criteria.
Catterick.
Found an interesting stat for Catterick in July meets.. There have been 37 Favourites with an sp in the 2-1 to 11-4 price range of which 5 have won at a 13.5% strike rate returning only 51.0% at BetfairSP. Thats good laying territory. Will certainly be targeting this angle today.
Lingfield.
Would you believe that Lingfield in July has a similar stat to Catterick as above?
Favourites in the 2-1 to 11-4 sp range had 11 winners from 65 runners at 16.9% strike rate with a 61.3% return. Again, strong laying territory.
Hope these figures can steer you in the right direction today.
Happy hunting!

Don't ya love it when a plan comes together....
Tuesdays racing at Ponte and Wolves went somewhat as expected so I had a decent day in the end coming out well on top to improve the bank balance. As I thought, the favourites again had a tough time of it at both tracks and I managed to choose the correct lay options in the majority of my lay selections.
At the end of the afternoon racing the profit was over $200 and with a relatively early start (for me!) coming up this morning, I left the evening meets alone.... If only UK racing started at a resonable Aussie time!!!
I have noticed on the timeform facebook forum that a fair selection of the posters are Australian which is interesting. The amount of late nights needed to make a decent crust is enourmous so I'm guessing that there are a lot of Aussie punters either A: not working or B: asleep at their desks for a good portion of the working day. Personally, I can juggle my part time working hours to suit so I'ts not really an issue but I would love to hear from some of you Aussies that burn the candle at both ends..... how do you do it??
I'll be back later with some stats for wednesdays racing.

Slim pickings.......
Living on the Gold Coast in Queensland certainly has its advantages with year round sunshine and access to some of the most pristine beaches and glorious surf in Australia. Unfortunately, friends and family tend to be attracted to this and my place, at times, becomes a hotel especially during the school holidays. The weekend past had us entertaining the multitudes and their offspring causing me to miss out on quite a bit of the weekend action.
UK racing begins in my house at aroundabout eleven pm each night but when we have guests(?), I'm usually too buggered or too pissed (usually both!!) by eleven to even think of playing the markets, hence I only managed to get a few races in on Sunday night which returned a profit .. only a small one but a profit nonetheless.
Last nights action was better returning $145 from the first race through to about one a.m. by which time the heavy weekend had caught up with me and I found myself dozing off between races ... must be getting old!
Tonights action from Wolverhampton and Pontefract could throw up a few good selections especially for those trading on favourites. Read the next post for some interesting stats.

Too many cooks.............
Had a shocker on Fridays action and in hindsight I can safely say that I had way too much going on in the background with Wimbledon, the world cup and the racing all circling around in my head at the same time.
At one stage I was down close to $400 and rather than compound my losses, I took a half hour break just to clear my head and review what I was doing wrong. It was obvious that I was not totally immersed in the race meetings so I just simply detached myself from the happenings at the tennis and football. Lo and behold... not one loss on the rest of the evenings race action!
Well, lesson learned.. I need to totally concentrate on what is important which is of course, looking after anything that has my money running on it. Seems simple enough but I guess its a case of being disciplined.
At the end of proceedings my bank was just shy of $200 down on the day which I was happy enough with considering the poor start that I had.
A positive to take away from the day... the value of taking a break if things are going wrong. That twenty or thirty minute break made all the difference with me allowing me to pinpoint what my problem was and to come back better equipped to handle the rest of the days action. I have to keep reminding myself that this is a serious business and I nedd to be professional about it. Dedication, concentration and discipline ......... elements that I certainly need to work on!!
Good fortunes people.

Tis gettin there!!
Just a quick update on the work in progress.
Have added two info pages which I will update on an inrunning basis (pun intended!)
The track info may be a wee bit out of date in some instances so please feel free to point any anomolies out to me via email. I am toying with the idea of having a facebook page where people can interact with their race ideas during racedays. It works quite well for Timeform radio with several regulars giving tips and ideas to the masses throughout the day. Must add a link to that page later.
Well its time for the pub here in Aussieland. Friday night is beerwench night... don't ask... it'll only upset you!

The penny has dropped!
Ok everyone.
After struggling to come to terms with not being able to make a decent enough income from backing horses, I have decided to make the move into the Lay side of things. Over the past few months I have been toying around with the inrunning market trying to find some laying angle with a consistantly high enough strike rate matched with a consistantly low exposure rate. The last month or so has seen me achieve enough consistancy for me to be confident that my method will work well.
I've had it in the back of my mind for ages now to blog my experiences but I really wanted to find one method that I like and, of course, stick to it.
Because of the very nature of the way I play the inrunning market, I can't possibly give out any 'tips' here so in effect this will only be a profit and loss blog. However, I will try to point readers in the right direction (hopefully!) regarding the methods I will use to identify selections that satisfy my methods.
Later, I will put up some sites that I use daily to narrow down a field giving me a few potential selections to play in running. I would, on average, spend a couple of hours a day on these sites and I would suggest to anyone, serious about making money from laying, put the time in.... you cannot make this work if you do not put the effort in!!
