Had an email from a mate in Ireland yesterday saying that he was loading up by as much as he could get his hands on with O'Briens Air Chief Marshall at Dundalk. Knowing that I like to play 'in-running', he suggested it may drift in running as Murtagh would more than likely leave it late to push the button on the jolly.
Now, being such short odds, I normally wouldn't go near it, but knowing my mate, this was as good as a certainty.
As forecast, the Air Chief sat just off the pace to the final furlong, drifting to just above evens, Murtagh duly pushed the button and the horse won by fifteen lengths.
I managed to get a decent amount matched at $1.90 - $1.95. Job done. Thanks mate!
I'm telling you this story just to point out that if an opportunity comes along, no matter how small it may seem, take it. You may even get lucky and double or triple your odds in running. Was it luck or was it a case of excellant race reading by my mate? Bit of both really but mainly it was about knowing how this particular jockey likes to ride in races like this and knowing that this horse was several classes above the opposition.
Actually it just occurred to me that on a visit to Ireland last year, this same mate and I were watching the Prix de l'Arc over a couple of 'quiet pints' (I've yet to come across a 'loud' pint!!).
Sea The Stars was waaaaaay back in the field getting passed by billy mcgintys donkey and all his cousins.. the horse was pulling fiercly this way and that, its tail flailing around all over the place and I honestly thought this thing was going to finish dead last... my mate had that smug look on his face of someone that knows something and he said "Kinane will romp this". Of course the rest is history... Sea The Stars won easing up in the end ... Kinane pushed the button and steered through the field...you just got to know how these jockeys operate.
I'm learning all the time and for in running plays it pays to get to know how a race is run. Be wary of laying against the top jocks especially in big prize races. They have an uncanny knack of getting a dead horse over the line... in front!
Oh yeah... last night... finished in front to the tune of $176.
Back later with a look at Tuesdays nags.
Good luck.
